I originally completed a BA degree in Psychology and Industrial Sociology and went on to focus on mediation as a form of conflict resolution through my Honours and then MA degrees at UCT.
The next fifteen years were spent working in the exciting field of industrial relations and then in training and leadership development in corporate as well as consulting environments. My achievements during this period included being the vice chairperson for the Industrial Relations Association of SA in the Western Cape.
My career changed as I accommodated the demands of three young children and I spent eight years lecturing at UCT whilst continuing with my private consulting. During this time, I trained in crisis intervention and trauma counselling and worked as a volunteer counsellor in the Survivors of Crime Unit at my local police station.
A distressing and difficult medical diagnosis of one of my children ultimately led to a return to my initial psychology degree through additional academic study at the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) where I completed an advanced certification in counselling. I continued with my private counselling and worked at St Luke’s Hospice as a bereavement counsellor for the next three years.
I trained in, and identify with, a core client-centered therapeutic approach and I therefore rely on the core principles of unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence. I have an integrative approach to my counselling which means I draw on a variety of techniques in order to meet the particular needs of my clients.
I enjoy hiking and walking, travelling and exploring (places and ideas and am always enrolled in a new course to ensure my knowledge is up-to-date), spending time with friends and reading. I am particularly drawn to the sea and to nature.
I see clients in person from Llandudno, Cape Town and also offer online sessions via Zoom. My online client base is spread internationally, including within SA and a number of other African countries, the east coast of the USA, Canada, the UK, across Europe, the Middle East and New Zealand.
